Minecraft: Story Mode – Season Two Episode 3: Jailhouse Block

The second season of Minecraft: Story Mode has been off to a strong start, and Episode 3: Jailhouse Block continues this season’s mighty momentum. The excellent interactive fights, information integral to the game’s central plot, and the fantastic soundtrack were what made this episode, in my opinion, the best so far. It does suffer from a slow start, but the cliffhanger ending will leave you yearning for the next episode.

Prison Break

Jailhouse Block has Jesse and his friends trapped inside a prison called the Sunshine Institute. Don’t let the name fool you, this is an exceptionally dangerous place where the Admin sends everyone he cannot stand; even the guards there are held captive against their will. Food is limited, and the prison is surrounded by a massive labyrinth full of dangerous monsters, both of which were custom-made by the Admin, himself. Escape is near impossible but, of course, that has never stopped Jesse, before.

Like I stated before, the first half of the episode starts off a little slow. It is disappointingly straightforward and doesn’t offer players much, with the exception of establishing the new location and featuring a handful of simple puzzles. It’s only during the final half of the episode that things begin to show merit, with exciting chase sequences and the most critical decision of the episode. The ending is weaker than episode two’s conclusion but leaves enough unanswered questions for players to look forward to the next episode.

Make Your Choice

Jesse must make his choices wisely to ensure the safety of his friends, giving the player multiple ways to complete the episode. Jesse can choose to be compliant and gain favor among those in power, or choose to be a freedom fighter for the prisoners. Either way, the choices you make will determine how those around you will treat you.

Some of the choices during the beginning of the episode don’t offer a lot of variety. Instead, they give Jesse multiple ways to say the same thing using a different tone. For example, when Radar decided to take on a new determined personality Jesse’s options were to remain silent or disagree with the change.

Outside of decision-making, the player will also interact with the environment by using a floating cursor, and input commands during quick-time events. This episode features more combat than the previous episodes, with one amazing boss fight that easily overshadows anything seen in both season one or two of Minecraft: Story Mode. I did wish a block option was available for the hand-to-hand combat though.

Unfortunately, the fresh faces Jesse encounters in the latest installment aren’t memorable. Most of the episode has you speaking to your team and attempting to escape the prison. With the exception of a handful of situations, most of the new characters are pushed to the back unless needed again.

Play it Again Sam!

I have to make it known that what really brought the entire episode together was the fantastic soundtrack. You had an amazing sense that the composer knew exactly what they were doing. While playing through the chase sequences, the music was brought to an exciting tone and made me feel extremely tense. The music made the boss encounters more thrilling and really got my blood flowing. They felt amplified by the complimentary soundtrack that fit the moment.

What’s Next?!

Minecraft: Story Mode – Season Two Episode 3: Jailhouse Block is another fantastic addition to this amazing season. It starts slow but, toward the end, builds up to a satisfying ending thanks to an exciting fight and shocking new information. Minecraft: Story Mode – Season 2 continues to delight, and Jailhouse Block is another great addition to this already exciting adventure.

Minecraft: Story Mode Season Two — Episode 3: Jailhouse Block starts off with a much more intriguing plot than the first two episodes in the season. Jesse and his companions are locked in a bedrock prison at the bottom of the world which is controlled by the Admin’s loyal followers. They must find a way to escape it and return to their hometown to put a stop to the Admin’s dastardly plans.

This episode is definitely the shortest so far clocking in at around 45 minutes, which is really short for a Telltale episode, however it is the strongest of the three episodes so far. The story flows quite nicely throughout with much better pacing than the previous episodes. There are also equal amounts of gameplay, dialogue, and combat that managed to keep us engaged from start to end which can’t be said for the previous Season Two instalments.

The choices in this episode actually feel like they are impactful with the opening beginning with different characters depending on your choices from the last episode. Also about halfway through you’ll be asked to make the biggest and most crucial decision yet in any episode of Minecraft: Story Mode and it’s one that will stay with you and leave you feeling guilty no matter which way you turn. It’s definitely a step in the right direction.

The really odd but humorous section of Jailhouse Block is that one of the inmates in the prison is actually Bob Ross, a well-known American artist back in the 80s and 90s, who still seems to be a very popular topic on YouTube these days. In the prison you are able to go and talk to him as he is painting, and he will try to help you out by delicately describing with his soothing voice what you need to do next. It’s rather weird that he was referenced in a game that is very much aged at younger children as we’re sure he’ll go right over their heads but it did give us a good chuckle and some much needed comical relief that has been absent from the rest of the season.

Conclusion

Jailhouse Block is a big step in the right direction for Minecraft: Story Mode Season Two and is far better than the first two episodes with a really well-paced and fast flowing plot. The more impactful decisions and a humorous appearance from a well-known artist keep your attention from start to finish – although that’s not saying much with a running time shorter than an hour.

Minecraft: Story Mode Season 2 – Episode 3 on PC

During our last outing with Jesse and friends in Minecraft: Story Mode, things took a turn for the dark when it was revealed that Vos wasn’t actually who he appeared to be. After the cliffhanger ending where the Admin came back to life and gave Petra the prismarine gauntlet, our heroes were thrown into the depths of the earth, imprisoned with the bedrock. While season 2 of Minecraft: Story Mode has been fairly lighthearted and comedic thus far, episode 3 (titled Jailhouse Block) gets quite a bit darker and a little less cheerful than what players have become used to.

After getting tossed into prison, we’re immediately introduced to a new and chirpy character simply known as the Warden. As his name suggests, he’s in charge of keeping things in order while the Admin isn’t around, and Jesse isn’t having any of it. Stella makes an appearance here too, and she’s also an associate at the prison who doesn’t waste any time in bossing Jesse around.

Episode 3 takes place entirely inside the prison, as we’re tasked with finding a way to escape. There are rumors of a mysterious Prisoner X who’s locked up at the very bottom of the place, and she’s been known to be an escape artist who attempts a breakout every so often. Jailhouse Block has players take control of Jesse as she meets the inmates that the Admin has captured, and we’re treated to a series of set pieces where we get to see the prison life that the Admin has created here.

There’s the Mush Room, where the inmates literally fight with each other over a single mushroom that spawns in the area every now and then. There are the zombie mines, where zombies are released into the area and the prisoners are forced to fight for their lives, while eating flesh to survive. Minecraft: Story Mode doesn’t really go into the gory details, but it presents the horror of the Admin’s actions and the threat he poses in an elegantly disturbing way.

Much like the previous two episode of season 2, Jailhouse Block is very much centered around the themes of friendship and trust. Jack, the grizzled adventuring veteran, is shaken up by the events that have just transpired. After experiencing a brief flash of hope when reuniting with Vos, he was revealed to be the Admin in disguise, and Jack is clearly left shell shocked as he struggles to hold on to Nurm, the only close friend he has left. Meanwhile, the relationship between Stella and Jesse is as hilariously tense as ever. It’s clear that Stella has an unhealthy lust for power, evident from the fact that she chose to side with the Admin even if you saved her in the previous episode. And yet, this time around, we get a glimpse of some of her insecurities as her shell begins to crack.

Jailhouse Block excels at illustrating the dynamics between all of these characters, and it all comes to a head when the player is finally presented with a heartbreaking choice near the end of the episode. Now, as I’ve mentioned in my episode 1 review, I found it hard to care too much about the decisions I was making, as my experience with Telltale games always proved that your choices (no matter how major they might seem) often never amount to any sort of big payoff in the story. And yet, Telltale managed to hit it out with the park with this one crucial decision. After setting up its message about friendship and camaraderie, this decision forced me to pause for a good five minutes as I tried to foresee the possible outcomes and consequences. With the way it was set up, I sincerely hope that this decision has far-reaching consequences, especially when you take the character relationships into consideration.

Minecraft: Story Mode season 2 is shaping up to be a really strong adventure. Aside from a few painful combat sections that dragged on too long this episode, the story is starting to get serious now, and I’m certainly looking forward to see where the last two episodes take us.
